The neighborhood cafe featuring Pauls Cafe Kuantan

This is not our first time dining at Paul's Cafe. I have written about them not that long ago. This is the link for my first blog post about Paul's Cafe.

We kept coming back because of the food and the awesome service.

Paul's Cafe
A15 lorong Seri kuantan 82, Star city, 25250 Kuantan, Pahang
Opens daily 11am to 11pm except Mondays
Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/PaulsCafeKuantan/about

Paul's Cafe is runned by Shirley and her family. She's mainly in charge of the cakes, husband the cooking whereas her children the barista. They serve real food with no added MSG.

Their current menu is also a homey collection of traditional Chinese and western food. The choices are not extensive, but all are their signature dishes.

Start with our favorite snack Paulky fries which is actually made of strips of luncheon meat. Yum yum!

Chicken burger- crunchy crumbed and fried gigantic piece of chicken thigh yet still juicy inside. One can choose grilled chicken if desired (I didn't because food intake only contributed to 20% cholesterol level anyway :p )Topped with their signature minced pork bolognaise sauce and. Sandwiched by charcoal buns sourced from a secret local bakery (not available to the public unfortunately).

Fish maw mee hoon soup. This is a rare find. For one, the broth is made by hours and hours of cooking with pork bones along with other secret ingredients. Yet it's not oily. Have this with fish maw that melts in the mouth; white fungus that's still slightly crunchy and full of texture and a hard boiled egg.

Paul's Cafe also offers an interesting range of beverages.

Matcha rose latte. Matcha powder sourced from Japan. Very fresh and goes down the throat smoothly. One can also taste a hint of rose fragrance that goes very well with matcha.

Non alcoholic mojito. Refreshing with a punch of mint and lime goodness. Combine this with fizzy soda water, this makes a soothing beverage.

Paul's café's secret weapon is actually their cakes. Watch out for updates on their Facebook page because the cakes are not available everyday and they sell like hot cakes literally! One can even order their cakes in advance (in whole or slices).

Mango cheese cake. Topped with mangoes freshly plucked from the owner's tree so it's seasonal. Layers of rich cream cheese intertwine with digestive biscuits. What a heavenly combination!

Pandan layer cake. Made from real screwpine juice with no artificial colouring. The sponge cake in between is still moist and dense. Baked by the owner's friend.

Carrot cake :) The ultimate comfort food. Need no further description.

Those who wish to dine in privacy can opt to  use their VIP room or even book the whole place for functions. Pauls also accepts catering for parties.

They also have daily special rates :)

Therefore, we rate Pauls Cafe 8/10! Try it out and let us know. Don't forget to get more discounts from OffPeak!

Teochew fried porridge 潮州炒粥 at DVictory Bistro Kuantan

It's always comforting to have piping hot porridge during this cold rainy season. To warm the hands and the stomach. But it's not easy to find good porridge.

DVictory offers pretty interesting options for porridge lovers.

This is their menu.

My favorite is mantis prawn porridge. Besides the prawn, lots of dried chilli flakes are also added. But the overall taste is fragrant chilli flavor, not too overpowering or strong for the sensitive stomach.

This is another interesting porridge- salted fish fried porridge. Bite sized salted fish, fried with prawn, dried shrimps and dried squid, as well as the porridge. All of these give the porridge a harmonious seafood taste, surprisingly not fishy at all.

Fish cake porridge. Made of saury. The fish cake is very smooth and fresh. The porridge overall taste light and is a great comfort food. Good for those who doesn't like heavily flavored food.
Have this with a few pieces of braised tofu and eggs-yum yum.

So our verdict is 7/10! Great porridge to try!

Makan makan at Orchard Road- Marche Movenpick 313 (part 3)

After teatime, we headed straight to  Marche 313- a Swiss themed restaurant for dinner.

313 Orchard Rd, Level 1, Discovery Walk, Singapore 238895
Opens daily 11am to 11pm
Website https://www.marche-movenpick.de/de (in German)

Really like the concept of open kitchen and the ability to order straight from the counter. But it's also dangerous because one is tempted to over order.

The pasta station.

Fresh pasta churned out from the machine continuously.

The crepe station.

Seafood Paella station.

Sausage and BBQ station.

Delectable desserts on display with very Christmassy gingerbread house.

Scan this card at each counter that we ordered.

Chicken crepe- soft and fluffy crepe, juicy chicken breast in chunks, parmesan cheese and a generous amount of salad.

Roast pork- very crunchy skin but soft and tender meat. Side-mash potato.

The all-time favorite rusti (basically sliced potatoes latticed and fried with a generous amount of mozzarella cheese and sour cream) To die for!

A single pizza is more than enough to fill 2 persons stomach.

We partly chose this place for its children playground as well. But their wooden playhouse is more suitable for older children.

Despite having to queue for food, the place is generally great and staff amicable. Just the price is slightly expensive (if I convert to MYR, easily spend RM50 per person). Our verdict 7.5/10!

Celebrate Christmas the German way featuring La Casa Kuantan

Authentic western cuisine is hard to come by in Kuantan. La Casa is proudly owned by this German chef Thomas who's also the head chef 6 years ago. Frequented by Caucasians and locals, it's well liked.

La Casa Kuantan
A-1820, Jalan Telok Cempedak, 25050 Kuantan, Pahang
Opens daily 6pm to 12am
09-568 9921

The restaurant is converted and renovated from a single storey house into a fully functional commercial kitchen with a cosy indoor and outdoor (smoking) dining area, as well as a bar. It's family friendly. At the same time, one can also choose to enjoy a pint of beer at their bar near the entrance.

We were welcomed by the staff at the door. Much to our delight, the familiar fresh bread greeted us at the entrance with a festive Christmas tree.

La Casa special menu of the day

The same bread served to our table with a dollop of garlic dip. This has always been my favorite. So fresh and soft in the middle with a nice crust around it. Goes very well with olive oil and balsamic vinegar too.

Entrée- crumbed calamari with fresh salad. Very cripsy coating but calamari was just cooked and very fresh. Harmonious combination with the dip.

Entree- bruschetta. This is the most generous portion of bruschetta I have ever had. So much cherry tomatoes till it just spills everywhere after a bite. The acidity of the tomatoes with the tanginess of balsamic vinegar becomes a great appetiser.

Main- Roast turkey. A dish befitting the Christmas season. Served the whole drumstick which was gigantic! It's roasted for a long period because the meat just came off the bone so easily and so tender until it just melted in the mouth. Sides- German red cabbage, mashed potatoes, blanched purple and baby carrots.

Main- Duck pasta. Linguine made in house- definitely fresh and taste nothing like store bought dehydrated pasta. The pasta is generously wrapped in lots of olive oil, tomato based cream sauce. Savor this with a few slices of pan seared smoked duck breast (La Casa cooks it slightly caramelized and cripsy)

Enjoy all these with freshly pressed fruit juice- green apple and orange here. Or if you fancy, a beer or a glass of wine.

Dessert- chocolate brownies. Brownies here are less dense but nevertheless chocolatey. Have this with their homemade vanilla icecream which is so smooth and light. Perfect combination.

Dessert- creme brulee. It's hard to resist the temptation not to lick the dish clean because the custard is just so thick, creamy and full of flavors. The caramel layer is also nicely done and not overpoweringly sweet.

Thomas emphasised that the huge Christmas tree at the corner is a real fir tree.

We had a wonderful pre Christmas dinner at La Casa. Therefore, Our verdict is 8/10!

So folks, don't forget to join Thomas and his crew for a wonderful Christmas and New Year! La Casa will open for business as usual during the period except 26 to 29 Dec 2017 (closed for renovation)

Makan makan at Orchard Road- the Marmalade Pantry (part 2)

After enjoying a few musical performance at the Great Christmas village, it's teatime!

The Marmalade Pantry.
ION Orchard 2 Orchard Turn, #03-22, Singapore 238801
Opens daily 10am to 10pm
Website http://themarmaladepantry.com.sg

As with everywhere else, when there's a queue, it immediately spells good food. We waited for about half an hour to get a table and another half an hour for the food. But this was fine because we were too absorbed catching up.

Lala clams vorgole. Lala, anchovies, chilli and garlic all in harmonious combination.

Arrabiata. Penne with grilled aubergine, feta cheese in a spicy tomato sauce.

Egg white omelette. Topped with feta cheese, spinach and tomato concasse, mixed mushrooms.

Truffle fries with shavings of parmesan cheese and chopped parsley. Always taste amazing when there's truffle.

Chocolate mudslide with gooey orange marmalade filling, hazelnut feulettine, vanilla with chocolate butter cream.

Red velvet cupcake with hazelnut spread filling and cream cheese frosting. Both are just the right amount of sweetness. Even baby Bing couldn't stop eating.

Fairly impressed with the quality of food but just slighty disappointed by the poor attitude of a certain waiter. Therefore, the verdict is 7/10.

Makan makan at Orchard Road-Real Food (part 1)

Our mission visiting Singapore during this short weekend is to meet up with friends. Therefore, we organised a nonstop eating marathon.

First stop at Real Food.
181 Orchard Road, #02-16 to 19 Orchard Central, Singapore 238896
Opens daily 10am to 8.45pm
Website http://www.realfoodgrocer.com

One of my childhood friends is an avid vegetarian. I love fresh fruits and vegetables as well.

Real Food serves fresh produce cooked in traditional ways to nourish the body and soul. Low salt, low sugar and no MSG even in their sauce.

Totally love the lifestyle decoration. One can easily spend the whole afternoon sipping coffee and reading books.

Besides serving hot food, they also sell vegetarian products. One can choose total vegan options, that's without garlic and eggs. We prefer to order their usual menu.

Spaghetti bolognaise with vegetarian balls. Love how strong the garlic smell is. Balls are crunchy yet moist inside and well seasoned.

Mushroom burger. Patty so well done that a non vegetarian like me took an instant liking to it. Pineapple slice used to replace cheese. Sides- baked beans and salad dressed with sesame sauce.

Vegetarian burger with patty made from a variety of barley and grains-goes really well with the mustard. Sides- potato wedges, baked vegetables.

Enjoy all these vegetarian goodness with a strong cuppa of cappuccino.

Will definitely revisit if I crave for vegetarian food. Our verdict 8/10!
