Living with COVID 19-- Home Surveillance Order (HSO) Survival Tips

We are in 2022 now and COVID 19 still has not left us for good. By now, most people would have had been infected/come into close contact with someone who has been infected. Now that most of us are also vaccinated and boosted (you should be boosted asap if you have not!), we should not be so coronaphobic-- take all precautions to follow SOP given that Malaysia is already in the endemic phase.

Everyone should know how to handle in case you are under a HSO or caring for one.

1. Follow this guide if you are a close contact.

2. Don't panic and if you are a healthcare worker (HCW), always refer to your hospital's Public Health Unit (Unit Kesihatan Awam- UKA) for guidance.

3. Make sure you stock up on COVID self test kits. I personally find the nasal swabs more accurate. (Many anecdotal examples tested negative on saliva but positive on nasal swab)

4. Isolate yourself and mask up immediately at home-- even though some said natural immunity after infection is stronger, but imagine the possible complications if one passes the virus to older adults or younger kids who have not been vaccinated.

5. Once tested positive, update on MySejahtera and also inform UKA for HCWs. If one has turned positively (unfortunately),  I find the official MOH website offers easy-to-understand graphics to guide HSO including disinfection, waste disposal and laundry. Whenever possible, the sick person should disinfect and launder on their own (in the room with attached bathroom). Clorox offers a good range of disinfecting products for COVID.

6. Perform MySejahtera self assessment and breathing exercise everyday. There is no longer a need to attend to the nearest Covid Assessment Center for category 1-2 patients. This is where to report your positive test result on MySejahtera.

7. Make sure one stays positive, try to exerise whenever possible. I do highly recommend to get your own thermometer, blood pressure machine and oximeter. Seek treatment if positive or if symptoms worsen.

8. Stay strong and you can do it!
MySejahtera will tell you when to end your HSO.

9. Watch out for long covid syndrome (I hope you will recover without complications though).

Take care and get well soon!
For those who are healthy, remember vaccination is still your best defence against COVID Infection.

Disinfect Surfaces Like A Professional with Clorox Start Clean to Stay Safe and Hygienic

The Covid-19 pandemic has made all of us hyper-aware of viruses and germs. The fourth wave of the pandemic is happening globally, fuelled by the highly transmissible Omicron variant. In Malaysia, the Omicron variant is now dominant

How can we keep ourselves and our loved ones safe from viruses and germs while reclaiming our home, work or study space, as a clean zone?

First, know what you’re dealing with. Covid-19 is a respiratory virus that can spread via droplets, when someone who has the virus coughs, sneezes or touches their face and then touches a surface. Use a disinfectant and make sure you always follow the product label’s instructions for proper usage and contact time.

Introducing the Clorox Expert Disinfecting range that helps you disinfect your home, workplace, school or university like a professional. Developed with components used in Clorox’ professional lines that are intended for hospitals and medical services, it is EPA-approved to kills 99.9% of both viruses and bacteria in 1 minute, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. It works professionally and thoroughly, making it a good choice to keep your space safe from germs and viruses including the COVID-19 virus*.

Clorox has been in the business of cleaning and disinfection solutions since 1913. Clorox is the #1 Bleach brand in the World and has been trusted for generations to kill 99.9% of germs. Its claims are backed by data and its products have been tried and tested even before the pandemic by professionals and home users.

“The Omicron variant is highly transmissible making it vital to disinfect hard surfaces, more often.  Aim to disinfect frequently touched surfaces like keys, door knobs and handles, mobile phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, keys, the interior of your vehicle and even parcels and deliveries. It is better to be extra vigilant to stay safe,” said Paulo Lao, Sales and Marketing Director for Clorox Southeast Asia. “The transmissibility of the Omicron variant means that we can be the ones who bring the virus into our homes and pass it to our loved ones.  It is important to disinfect the items we come in contact with for safety, hygiene and peace-of-mind.”

Clorox would like to share some tips on how you can reclaim your space and protect yourself and your loved ones in the face of rising Omicron cases.

Work, School and College Space Safety

Collaboration is a large part of in-office and in-person school or college sessions. While we aim to maintain social distancing, we might come in contact with items that have been touched by others. It is okay to be a ‘clean freak’ by disinfecting your work or study area when you arrive and again after lunch.

Create a Prevention Pack

Keep illness prevention items (such as face masks, face shields, hand sanitizer, disposable gloves, disinfecting wipes and disinfecting spray) in a centralised spot in your home, the centre console of your car, at your work or study station, or inside your purse/backpack for when you’re on the go.

Disinfect all your devices and ‘carry-ons’ daily

Your carry-ons such as your handbag, backpack, laptop, and mobile phone may come in contact with droplets – from yourself or from those around you. Always give these items a good wipe down. Be sure to bring along the Clorox Expert Disinfecting Wipes flowpack when you are out and about to ensure that your personal items are safe and not inadvertently spreading the virus.

Disinfect your vehicle

We spend so much time in our vehicles, often with our masks off. Keep Clorox Expert Disinfecting Wipes within reach, to wipe down and disinfect hard surfaces in your vehicles. Remember to wipe the air conditioner vents and the door handles both inside and out.

Spray the germs away

Before bringing groceries or parcels into your home, spray them down. Keep Clorox Expert Disinfecting Spray at the entryway to quickly disinfect items to keep you safe from viruses and bacteria.

Disinfect high-touch hot spot surfaces in your homes

Handrails, light switches, handles and doorknobs are all notoriously germy, as are high-touch items like phones, computer keyboards and TV remotes. We recommend Clorox Disinfecting Wipes for in home usage as they kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria including the Covid-19 virus in just 15 seconds. Give them a good once-over daily.

Don’t let your guard down. Following these simple tips can help us stay safe and healthy, better able to cope with the challenges posed by the Omicron variant.

The Clorox Expert range includes Clorox Expert Disinfecting Wipes Flowpack of 15s and 30s and Clorox Expert Disinfecting Spray. Prevention is better than cure-- UV protection is definitely the way to go! Read here for more about the types of UV protection available.

A good skincare regime such as Murad Rapid Dark Spot Correcting Serum and City Skin Age Defense Broad Spectrum Suncreen play an important role in both preventing and treating photoaging as well! This skincare range is suitable for any skin types so share them with your BFFs and loved ones.

What Are the Mental Health Effects of Bullying?

Children in schools and high schools have an increased chance of becoming victims of bullying. Kids at these ages are mainly developing their moral compass, and we can't entirely blame them for behaving aggressively since we, the adults, are responsible for their counseling. To better understand how kids can get bullied and how they can deal with it, we have put together this piece of content.

1. What are the types of bullying?

To start, let's understand the different kinds of bullying that kids can become victims of.

Physical Bullying: Physical bullying is also one of the most common types of bullying ever since the whole concept started. It's basically a physically stronger kid than others hitting, kicking, punching, shoving, or damaging property. This is also a more severe type of bullying that affects the child's physical and mental state.

Verbal Bullying: This type of bullying takes the form of calling others negative and humiliating names, insulting them or making them the subject of a bad joke, cursing, racial or other offensive remarks, and teasing them in a way they don't enjoy. Even though these are just words, verbal bullying can take its toll on the victim's mind if done for too long.

Social Bullying: Social Bullying is pretty hard to pinpoint since it is mostly done behind the person's back; you hardly know who it is, ruining the social reputation of the victim. This can be done through spreading false rumors, playing nasty pranks or jokes, mimicking their imperfections and faults, excluding them from social gatherings, damaging their social reputation by other means. Social Bullying leads to dire consequences as, in the long run, it will alienate the child, which could damage their personality growth and development.

Cyber Bullying: Cyber Bullying is defined as the intentional and continuous harm dealt to a person through the usage of mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices. Since it is so easy to bully someone on the internet and get away with it, there is a high risk of getting picked on while using it. This type of bullying includes spreading hurtful rumors, impersonation, intentionally blocking someone out, abusive and hurtful messages.

 2. What are the signs of bullying?

The following are signs that have been observed in people suffering from bullying:

Emotional and behavioral hints of bullying

● Change in sleeping patterns
● Change in eating patterns
● Frequent anger or tears
● Mood swings
● Feeling ill in the morning daily
● Withdrawing from people
● Starting to stammer
● Increased aggressiveness and unreasonable behavior
● Refusing to talk about wrong things
● Beginning to pick on siblings
● Consistently losing money or stealing.

Physical hints of bullying

● Unexplained bruises, marks, cuts, and scratches
● Coming home with missing or damaged belongings or clothing
● Coming home hungry or angry.

School hints at bullying

● Not wanting to go to school
● Changing their walking route to school.
● Don't want to attend school using the bus/tram/train
● School grades are consistently falling.

Other hints of bullying

Sometimes hints of bullying can be subtle:

● Often sitting alone or being excluded from groups at school
● Frequently targeted for teasing, mimicking, humiliation, or ridicule at school
● Can't speak up in class and feel insecure or appear frightened.

3. What are the mental health consequences of bullying?

Bullying has become a part of our lives, even though there have been countless movements and attempts to end it. The reason for this is that bullying might not feel like a big deal to the bully, but the victim could be inflicted with permanent mental damage. Even though bullying doesn't cause learning and developmental disabilities like Autism, it can certainly make it worse and prevent the child from overcoming the challenges and difficulties they are facing. Here's a list of how bullying can affect children:

• Social isolation

• Changes in eating habits

• Sleep disturbance

• Feelings of shame

• Low self-esteem

• School avoidance

• Symptoms of anxiety

• Bedwetting

• Higher risk of illness

• Psychosomatic symptoms (stomachaches, headaches, muscle aches, other physical complaints with no known medical cause)

• Poor school performance

• Symptoms of depression

4. What are some tips and strategies, including how schools can help?

As we mentioned before, stopping bullying completely is something that cannot be done on a global scale. However, there are some methods and tricks children can use to avoid getting bullied in the first place. Here's a list of strategies, methods, and tricks that have proved to be most effective to avoid getting bullied:

● Not Giving the Bully a Chance. If you aren't there, you can't get bullied. It is highly advisable that children avoid getting bullied by simply not giving the bullies a chance to pick on them. Obviously, you can't avoid them in class, but you can eat at a different table, relax in a different area and avoid school parts that bullies usually visit.
● Stand Your Ground & Feel Good - Your body posture and facial expression could be the reason why bullies might be picking on you. Stand up tall and walk your way bravely; chances are, the bullies might not want to risk a confrontation with you. Kids who appear confident and aren't overweight have less chance of getting bullied. Less time on the sofa and more for exercising.
● Two is Better than One - Getting yourself a buddy, preferably someone who is stronger than you, is an excellent solution to ending the bullying. Besides, two or more pose a bigger threat to the bullies than you on your own. So, go out and make good friends who will stand up for each other.
● Ignore - There have been instances where the bully stopped picking on someone just because the victim began to utterly ignore their presence no matter what the bully did. Try ignoring their actions and moving past them.
● Never Hit Back - Bullies will be stronger than you on average, so don't ever hit back. You also could end up in trouble even though you are the victim here.
● Tell an Adult - If all else fails, the best thing is to tell an adult and handle the situation responsibly.
